Tutoring Support

Chapter Scholarship Programs

Moving from a highly structured high school environment to the freedoms of college can be a challenging adjustment for students. Fraternities and sororities assist in many facets:

  • Customized scholarship improvement programs
  • Faculty/university advisers (required for each chapter)
  • Networking through upperclassmen with knowledge of campus resources such as the library, tutors, computer labs and campus/community study locations
  • Scholarship incentive programs
  • Study partners
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Time management workshops

Member Resources

If you are a current member seeking academic support or resources, ask your chapter members! Your scholarship chair will be able to walk you through your chapters scholarship and academic plan and resources for members. If you are not sure what questions to start with, use the ones below.

1. Do we provide tutoring funds that might pay for me to get an individual or small group tutoring sessions?

Sorority and Fraternity Engagement has developed a partnership with the Academic Success Center. This partnership allows for chapters to use chapter funds to pay for individual members or group tutoring for thier members. Each chapter in the community uses this partnership differently. If you are a current member, you can contact the Sorority and Fraternity Engagement Office to see if your chapter provides this support to members. If you are a chapter leader interested in establishing this resource for your members, you can contact the Sorority and Fraternity Engagement Office to begin offering this to members.

2. If there are scholarships available for you as a member of your chapter through your (inter)national organization or the local chapter at Iowa State University?

3. Are there other members who are in my same college or major, that might be able to serve as an academic mentor for me?

How Sorority and Fraternity Engagement can help you set up tutoring and resources for your chapter:

Iowa State University Sorority and Fraternity chapters have the option to create an on-campus account to provide tutoring funds for its members. The chapter must notify the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement of their interest in setting up an account, provide a check to cover tutoring funds, and submit a list of chapter members who the funding will support.

The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement will work with Campus Organizations Accounting to create the chapter’s account. Selected chapter members will utilize the Academic Success Center online tutoring request form and select ‘General Greek Scholarship Account’ as the funding option. The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement will verify eligibility from the ASC online portal and the list of members from the chapter and approve funding. Funding from chapters will not include the five dollar administrative set up fee from the Academic Success Center, this will be billed individually to chapter members.

The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement will manage the tutoring funds in the specific chapter tutoring account as well as verify funds are dispersed appropriately to the approved chapter members. The Sorority and Fraternity Engagement office will communicate with the chapter representative via email regarding funds remaining. It is the responsibility of the chapter to keep the account funded. Tutoring for members will not be approved if funding is not available. Should there be a change in the chapter contact, please notify the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement as soon as possible.

The tutoring contract may be terminated by either the chapter or Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement by giving the other party a 14 day notice. Terminating the relationship and changing the on-campus account to inactive may take up to 30 days. Chapters should use all funds in the account or transfer to another on-campus account before changing to inactive status.
